Revenues used as Postage on Covers. Ten covers with Revenue stamps affixed in an attempt to use them as postage, nearly all are First Issue perforated, plus a couple from later issues, a few are also franked with 1c, 2c or 3c 1861 Issue stamps, most were flagged by postmasters as illegal uses and struck with due markings, a few appear to have been accepted including one making up part of the 10c rate to Canada, also one check with 3c and 5c 1861 regular postage used as revenues, some faults to be found but overall a fascinating and scarce group, postage stamps used as Revenues are rather frequently encountered, but Revenue stamps used as postage are more elusive, this is a choice group of such uses

Revenues Accumulation, Mostly First Issue Imperforate and Perforated. Old-time stock book with neatly arranged singles, a few pairs and a few blocks, selected by the owner for superior condition, virtually all are well-centered, some are unused, some cancelled solely by handstamps including some struck in red, the imperforates all have four large margins and some have sheet margins, among the many better items are R1a (2), R27a strip of five, R29c block of four, R41a, R45a strip of four, R45c block of four, R47a (two pairs), R50a (two pairs), R76c strip of five, R78a pair and strip of three, R79c, R80c (2), R81a, R83c pair, R100c (7), several other better, also some Second and Third Issue stamps, apart from the higher catalogue value items noted here, the collection really shines when looking at the quality of the lower value items, one would be hard-pressed to find these elsewhere in such high quality, a few faults to be expected but overall the collection is full of Extremely Fine Gems, Scott value in excess of $17,000 does not convey its true value based on condition

California Documentary Revenue Tax Stamps, 1866-1872, High-Quality Collection. 93 stamps, including 58 imperforate values from 4c to $20.00, 29 circular die cut values from 10c to $10.00, and 6 rouletted values from 4c to $1.00, the extremely high quality of this group will afford collectors the opportunity to start a new collecting area, or the ability for established collectors to add examples which are difficult to find in choice quality, almost all the rectangular stamps have large margins all around, and many have legible handstamps, the same is true for the scarce rouletted examples, believed to have been made for a single banking company, nearly all the circular die cut stamps include 90% or more of the circular area (unusual), each stamp bears the controller’s overprint of GO, RW, or JJG, a few small faults might be found but the collector intended to collect everything fault-free, the collection and collector’s inventory included in our website PDF, 2013 State Revenue Catalog value $1,657
