5c Dark Brown (1a). Large margins all around with trace of adjoining stamp at top, dark shade, intermediate impression, complemented by blue numeral "2" in double-line circle cancel of Philadelphia, beautifully struck at center so that the curve of the "2" outlines Franklin's face, Extremely Fine Gem, a beautiful stamp with the "2" in circle perfectly placed, according to an article by Dr. Vernon R. Morris, Jr. in Chronicle 200, the "2" handstamp was used in Philadelphia to indicate payment in cash of "to the mails" carrier service for a destination outside the old city limits (pre-1854 consolidation), ex "Natalee Grace", Gorham and "Yellowstone", with 1998 and 2012 P.F. certificates

Ex Hart and Caspary (the Jan. 16, 1956 H.R. Harmer sale description for lot 80 states "Pronounced and very rare blackish color"). Signed Ashbrook who states "Genuine Black Brown." With 2025 P.F. certificate as Dark Brown.

5c Brown Orange (1d). Original gum, lightly hinged, bright color, worn-plate impression, large to full margins and clear at lower right, two tiny pinholes and horizontal crease

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE BROWN ORANGE SHADE.

With 2002 P.F. certificate for a vertical pair in the Red Brown shade and stating Mint N.H. With 2025 P.F. certificate noting the shade as Brown Orange and previously hinged. Scott 1d is unpriced as original gum in Scott. Using the same multiplier for gum vs. no gum for the basic Scott 1 shade ($2,100 vs. $6,000), this would catalogue $12,850 with gum.
