Intense shade and impression, beautifully centered, Boston "Paid" in oval cancel (associated with early 1861 shades), Extremely Fine, the rare and distinctive Boston Purple and Rich Red Lilac shades are described in an article by William K. Herzog (Chronicle 124), this stamp is ex Caspary, Moody (where described as "Red Violet"), Klein and Zoellner, with 1988 P.F. certificate as Red Lilac
24c Red Lilac (70). Deep shade and proof-like impression, perfectly centered, neat strike of segmented cork cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1861 24-CENT RED LILAC ISSUE. THIS STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED.

With 1994 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $3,000.00). Only two have graded higher (at 95J and 98, offered in our Kirke and Merlin sales) and only five others share this grade. This is the first example in this grade we have offered.

24c Violet, Thin Paper (70c). Wonderful margins and centering with perforations clear of design all around, magnificent deep "Cincinnati" shade with appropriate dark blue "Cincinnati O. Dec. 6" double-circle datestamp, slightly nibbed perfs at top, still Very Fine and choice, tremendous eye-appeal
24c Violet, Thin Paper (70c). Perfectly centered with wide margins, intense Violet color and proof-like impression, bold blue "Cincinnati O. Aug. 10" circular datestamp and also part of red foreign transit handstamp at bottom, most recent certificate notes corner perf crease at top right and 1mm tear at top left, Extremely Fine appearance, combined with the blue and red cancellations, the shade of this stamp and its superb overall appearance make this a desirable stamp, with 1985 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates
24c Violet, Thin Paper (70c). Intense shade and impression on bright paper, cancelled by well-struck criss-crossed grids, few shortish perfs not mentioned on accompanying certificate, otherwise Extremely Fine, a stamp with nice visual appeal, with 1996 P.F. certificate
24c Pale Gray Violet, Thin Paper (70d). Near perfect centering with unusually wide margins, the delicate early shade on thin crisp paper, razor-sharp strike of large green 6-ring target cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXTRAORDINARY STAMP THAT COMBINES ONE OF THE RAREST 1861 SHADES WITH A TRUE GREEN CANCEL -- IN SUPERB FLAWLESS CONDITION.
The 24c Pale Gray Violet shade, Scott 70d, comes from an early 1861 printing on thin paper, a characteristic shared by the Violet and Steel Blue stamps. Scott 70d's rarity has been more widely recognized in recent years. This stamp, cancelled by a large 6-ring target in deep green ink, is incalculably rare. While we must always allow for the possibility of another example, it requires great imagination to envision another superbly-centered 24c Pale Gray Violet in sound condition, cancelled in green. This is not an offering likely to duplicated.
