Gavit & Co., Albany N.Y., 5c Franklin, Die Essay on India (1Xa-E1b). Five, in each of the Scott-listed colors, large margins showing cross-hatching on each, brilliant colors, Very Fine and rare complete set with each showing the cross-hatching, these are normally cut down and nearly every set we have encountered only shows one or a couple with the full cross-hatching
Gavit & Co., Albany N.Y., 5c and 3c Franklin, Die Essays on India (1Xa-E1, 11-E3). Four of each essay, all but two are cut close with a mix of India and card, one 1Xa-E1 shows cross-hatching, several colors, a couple typical small flaws including one 11-E3 with slight toning, overall Very Fine or appear so

5c, 10c 1847 Reproduction, Atlanta Trial Color Proofs on Card (3TC4-4TC4). Complete sets of all five colors, full margins nearly throughout (5c Brown just clear on one side), fresh colors
VERY FINE. A SCARCE COMPLETE SET OF THE ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PROOFS OF THE 5-CENT AND 10-CENT 1847 REPRODUCTIONS.
The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 50 in each color was printed. The sheets were somehow acquired by James A. Petrie of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, at the close of the exposition (along with the 1869 invert card proof sheets). Petrie claimed that he rescued the proofs just before they were to be burned. They were cut up into one set of blocks of eight, two sets of blocks of four, pairs and singles. Very few have been kept together as intact sets.

5c Orange Brown, 10c Black, Reproduction, Small Die Proofs on Wove (3P2-4P2). Affixed to 48 x 110mm piece of gray card from a Roosevelt presentation album, "1847" label between, fresh and Extremely Fine, only 85 were produced and very few sets remain with the "1847" label, ex Fekete, Scott value as two normal cut-down proofs
5c Red Brown, 10c Black, Reproduction, Plate Proofs on Card (3P4-4P4). Two sets, fresh colors with the two 5c slightly different shades, ample margins except one 5c close at top, Very Fine

Four, in each of the Scott-listed colors except Orange Brown (which may not exist as we and other specialists have not encountered one), from second state of the die with dash above "P", Brown is 31 x 38mm, the others slightly smaller to 26 x 30mm, fresh colors, Very Fine, ex Hulme
5c Deep Red Brown, Trial Color Plate Proof on Wove (12TC5c). Margins close but clear on all four sides, deep rich color, Fine, a scarce proof in the Deep Red Brown shade, which is often mistaken (or misrepresented) as No. 12 unused, P.F. certificate 117627 no longer accompanies

5c 1856 Issue, Trial Color Plate Proofs on Wove (12TC5). Three, in Olive Green, Olive Brown and Deep Orange, rich colors, Very Fine
10c Green, Type I, Large Die Proof on India (13P1). Cut down to stamp size showing complete design as well as layout lines around the design at top, rich color on bright paper, fresh and Fine, with 1981 P.F. certificate which calls this No. 13P2 (we believe erroneously), Scott value for full-size $5,000
12c Black, Plate 3, Plate Proof on Stamp Paper (36BP5). Large margins all around, unused (no gum), Extremely Fine, the rare imperforate 12c Plate 3 on regular stamp paper is akin to the 24c, 30c and 90c imperforates made at the same time
24c Lilac, Plate Proof on India (37P3). Large to full margins, Very Fine, with 2005 P.F. certificate as No. 37c
30c Orange, Plate Proof on India (38P3). Bright color, touched at bottom, other margins large including sheet margin at top, Fine and scarce
1c-90c 1857 Reprints, Atlanta Trial Color Proofs on Card (40TC4-47TC4). Complete set of eight denominations in Green, mostly ample to full margins, bottom of 5c just in, couple others with a side to touched, bright colors, overall Very Fine, the Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta, only one sheet of 50 in each color was printed
1c-90c 1857 Reprints, Hybrid Large Die Proofs on India (40P1-47P1, LO1P1-LO2P1). Complete set of eight plus the two Carrier Dept. die proofs, India paper cut close and affixed to larger India paper die sunk on 110 x 145mm cards, brilliant colors, 30c with minor speckled toning specks, 1c Franklin Carrier proof with some slight dampstaining at bottom of card, overall Very Fine and scarce complete set, particularly with the two Carrier proofs which catalogue more than double the value of the other individual proofs, these only come as hybrids
1c-90c 1857 Reprints, Small Die Proofs on Wove (40P2-47P2). Each on original gray card backing from a Roosevelt album with large card margins, gorgeous fresh colors

Only approximately 85 albums were produced.

Complete sets on India and card, the India set with an extra 5c (showing different degree of trimming of the projections at top and bottom) and extra 30c (one slightly oxidized and tiny margin nick), brilliant colors, Very Fine, the card proof set includes No. LO1P4, also brilliant colors, Very Fine
1c-90c 1857 Reprints, Plate Proofs on India (40P3-47P3). Blocks of four, gorgeous colors and full margins throughout, few trivial flaws as often associated with this fragile paper including 12c and 24c small translucency, but in better condition than most sets seen, fresh and Very Fine set of blocks
Toppan, Carpenter & Co, 1861 Issue Die Essays, Cut to Shape (63-E9a/72-E5a). Five essays including 1c, 5c (Brown), 12c, 24c (Lilac) and 90c, 12c and 24c affixed to small cards, brilliant colors, bright and fresh, Very Fine, the wide availability of the 1903 reprints produced by Ernest Schernikow sometimes misleads collectors into the sense that these original 1861 Toppan Carpenter essays are common, but they are not, a footnote in Scott states "examples on 1861 paper and in 1861 colors are rare"
1c-90c 1861 First Designs and Colors, Plate Essays. 16 stamp-size essays with duplication to show color varieties, including 1c in Indigo (two) and Ultramarine, 3c in Brown Red and Scarlet, three 5c in perhaps very slightly different shades, 10c in Green, Dark Green and Light Green, 12c, 24c, 30c and 90c in normal colors, also 90c in Green, a couple tiny flaws may be encountered but a nice assemblage of First Designs showing the shade variations
1c-90c 1861 First Designs and Colors, Small Die Essays/Proofs on Wove (62BP2/72E7c, formerly 55P2/62P2). Eight proofs from a Roosevelt album, missing only the 3c Scarlet as they appeared on the complete page, bright and fresh colors, Very Fine, only 85 Roosevelt albums were produced, most of the designs here are indistinguishable from the 1861 Second Design proofs (offered in the following lot) when cut down, but the colors do show subtle differences
1c-90c 1861-66 Issue, Small Die Proofs on Wove (63P2/78P2). Complete set of ten proofs from a Roosevelt presentation album, 2c Black Jack Die II, bright colors and full card margins, Very Fine and desirable set, only 85 albums were produced
1c-90c 1861-66 Issue, Plate Proofs on India (63P3/78P3). Complete set of 11 denominations in blocks of four, 3c represented by both Lake and Rose, all with large margins all around, 24c with part imprint left margin and 15c with sheet margin at top, a few with the usual India paper translucencies

2c Black, Die II, Large Die Proof on India (73P1a). On 37 x 48mm card, die no. 1030 at bottom, intense proof shade showing the star on cheek and dots in upper left scroll, Very Fine, the Die I large die proof is exceedingly rare with probably fewer than five known in any size, this Die II proof is also very elusive and is frequently found as a hybrid (this example is not a hybrid), SCV $2,500
3c Scarlet, Panama-Pacific Small Die Proof on Wove (74P2a). Brilliant color, paper toning as with all Panama-Pacific proofs, small thin spot at left, Very Fine appearance, rare, with 2013 A.P.S. certificate
15c Black, Plate Proof on India (77P3). Bottom part imprint and plate no. 41 strip of three, full margins other sides, left proof with couple small scrapes, still Very Fine position multiple
24c Lilac, Plate Proof on India (78P3). Block of four with bottom part imprint and "No. 6 Plate", wonderful intense color, top left stamp small thin spot, Very Fine appearance, Scott value for block without premium for the position
