Most of the designs here are indistinguishable from the 1861 Second Design proofs (offered in lot 14) when cut down, and are therefore particularly desirable on the original page.

5c Brown, First Design, Plate Essay on India (67-E9d; Formerly 57P3). Bottom imprint and plate no. 3 block of eight, on original card backing so free of the usual India paper flaws, just a minor wrinkle near bottom, deep rich color, India paper clipped slightly at bottom left corner but not noticeable as the card is completeVERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE 5-CENT 1861 FIRST DESIGN ON INDIA PAPER.

RARELY SEEN WITH THIS DEGREE OF COMPLETION.
Loewenberg's patent (no. 42,207 dated April 5, 1864) involved printing on a starch coated wove paper, creating a barrier between the ink and the paper. Any attempt to wash off a cancellation would remove the design. MacDonough's patent (no. 52,869, dated Feb. 27, 1866) involved printing with a glycerin based soluble ink which would wash off when trying to remove a cancel. It only comes in the Brown color. Wyckoff's patent (no. 53,723 dated April 3, 1866) was a printing on wove paper that had been coated with a water-color pigment, "China White". Any attempt to remove or wash off a cancel would remove the stamp design. For a more extensive discussion of these essays see James E. Lee's Chronicle article (No. 209, pp. 40-43). Copies of the patent papers accompany.
