5c 1865 Newspaper Issue, Large Die Trial Color Proofs on Thin Hard Wove (PR1TC1a). Three, in Deep Reddish Brown, Dark Orange and Green, first 75 x 152mm, other two approximately 65 x 143mm, gorgeous colors, each showing the full-size uncleared die and the die abrasion at top caused by mounting and dismounting the die on the press with screws, fresh in every respectVERY FINE. EACH OF THESE COLORS FOR THE 1865 5-CENT NEWSPAPER ISSUE TRIAL COLOR PROOFS IS UNIQUE. AN OUTSTANDING TRIO OF PROOFS FROM THE FIRST NEWSPAPER ISSUE.
The Scott Catalogue incorrectly lists these trial color die proofs on India paper, and only in these three colors plus Bright Red (which is priced at 20% the value of the others). The Kotanchik collection contained these three proofs plus three other colors that are not listed in Scott. Each is believed to be unique.

A REMARKABLE SET OF TRIAL COLOR PLATE PROOFS WITH IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBERS FOR THE FIRST LARGE-FORMAT NEWSPAPER STAMPS.
