U.S. Postage Stamp Presentation Album with Plate Proofs on Card. Attractive leather and clothbound volume with gold-stamped "Hon. William Whiting, Holyoke Mass. 1885", horizontal-format pages with each page approximately 240 x 160mm, title page reads "Specimens of American Postage Stamps 1847-1885", each page contains one plate proof on card with frame around each stamp and Issue year, starting with 1847 Issue and including Franklin and Eagle Carriers, 1851-56 Issue, 1861-66 Issue, 1869 Pictorial Issue, one set of Bank Note issues, also Officials, Newspapers and Periodicals and Postage Due, pages with some slight buckling to be expected as all proofs are in the center of their respective pages, overall fresh and Very Fine, an unusual presentation binder, the recipient was an active Republican in local and national politics and was a paper manufacturer

They were cut up into one set of blocks of eight, two sets of blocks of four, two sets of pairs and singles. Very few have been kept together as intact sets.

The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 50 in each color was made available after 1881. The existence of this set of blocks of eight is truly remarkable.
